happy holidays y'all

A little off the top

Are you all missing my lovely words of wisdom? My fascinating bantering of life and more?! What? I can’t hear you. I will take that as a resounding YES. Well, I will be back with all of that soon. But in the meantime, it is almost my most favorite holiday of the year – HALLOWEEN!! What are you guys gonna be for the day?

As I have mentioned before (but still really never gone into full detail) I teach English here on the island. Mostly to kids but I have three sisters from Ecuador that are in their 30s and they are so fun to teach. But for my kiddos this week and next for Halloween we are carving pumpkins. I never see any Jack-O-Lanterns here on the island so I hope my neighbors find mine cool – and not weird. Will show the pumpkins of my students soon.

But til then, this cracked me up.

Reminds me of New Orleans

I have a confession. I am addicted to …. Pinterest. Yes, it’s true. There are so many different categories for your interest (get it, interest with pins = Pinterest). All you do is join, follow people that you like and pin things that you like. I did see a pin from ecards that said Pinterest is just electronic hoarding. Which is somewhat true. I don’t necessarily immediately create everything I pin but there is a good possibility that I will get around to it. And it is great for finding creative ideas for teaching English. At least electronic hoarding is better than actual hoarding. Riiiight? Wanna follow me on Pinterest? Click here to go to my page and then click on FOLLOW.

I have many different boards: fashion, food, tees and totes, teaching, paintings, etc. And I am going to randomly post on my blog things that inspire me. For instance, this picture. It reminds of my recent trip to New Orleans. Isn’t it beautiful?

Eat ~ Mallorca LA BOVEDA

My lovely German friend Imke was here for a few days to visit me. It was so nice to see her! She wanted tranquilo so we did pretty much that. Except her last night we went out for a good dinner in Palma. I always like to try out new restaurants when friends are here. And that night we went to La Boveda, proclaimed as the best tapas restaurant on the island.

I’ve read that it fills up fast so I made a reservation. And when we arrived at 8:00 (when it opened) there was a line at the door. We were seated immediately and given a menu. So many options! If you don’t know what tapas are, let me explain. Tapas are small portions of Spanish cuisine – meats, cheese, seafood, etc. They can be hot or cold dishes. You order enough for the group. Many tapas restaurants give an option of a large portion or smaller portion depending on the size of your group.

We ordered the small meat plate (chorizo, jamon serrano, sobrasada) which came with four slices of Mahon cheese, sauteed shrimp, bread with aioli (the famous mayonnaise with garlic), lamb chops which also had french fries and pimientos de padron, and dates with bacon. Plus a half bottle of Rioja and …. PERFECT. So many other options on the menu, we really wanted to order one of everything – maybe with a group of about twenty that is possible. Next time.

What we did order was a little too much for two people but we tried our best to finish it. We even had fresh pineapple for dessert because there is no such thing as leaving without dessert.

Go to La Boveda! A fantastic tapas restaurant in the old town of Palma, my favorite area. If you like tapas, you will not be disappointed.

Stop the bullying

Sometimes here on the island of Mallorca I feel so distanced from the real world of the USA. Whether it’s the political drama (Go OBAMA), college football games, the right for everyone to be married, Dancing With the Stars or just the everyday life can feel a bit surreal to me.

But then, something happens and I feel like I am right there. Usually it is something tragic that drags me back, like this time. Today, a thirteen year old boy committed suicide at my old Junior High School. The place of such fond memories for me of hanging out by my locker with my friends, giggling about cute boys, hanging out in the “pit”. Of course, there are not so fond memories of feeling insecure of how I looked – very skinny with braces, I was kind of in-between groups of friends – my main group seemed to be shutting me out and I was desperate to keep myself within the “cool” group, absolutely no boys thought I was cute and I am sure the list went on and on.

.
Supposedly, the boy who died was being bullied. I do not know that for a fact but I could see that being possible. Being a teen is a rough time! You want to be the coolest person ever, the greatest singer, the best athlete, the most popular cheerleader but for most of us during that time frame, it doesn’t happen. It doesn’t happen because it is practically impossible! Those teenage years are hard. You are gangly, or fat, or have acne, or crazy hair or whatever; for the most part we aren’t cool during this time. And kids can provoke. And kids can be mean. But what you need to do is stand up.

I know it’s hard. Standing up for myself is STILL hard. But if you are bullied you need to speak out – tell your teacher, tell your parents. It’s okay, this is not being a tattletale, this is sticking up for your rights, for your protection. Bullying is not cool.

And the last part of my soapbox. Be proud of who you are. You are different! Hallelujah! Different is good. Who wants to be normal? Maybe you are being bullied because you look different, because you dress different, because you act different. Who cares. You are loved. You are loved by your parents, your friends, your teachers. The world is full of acceptance, keep striving with life. It gets better! I promise. It gets better. You are not alone. Check out itgetsbetterproject.com for help, ideas, inspiration. Because we are all in this together. Do not let life go, it is such a beautiful thing.

I contemplated whether or not to add this but I feel Glee really touches on issues and this was one of my favorite songs from them. Which speaks so much to bullying. Be a loser like me. And know you are LOVED.
