Happy St. Patrick’s Day! If you are out tonight in Palma don’t forget to stop by Hogans, Shamrock Fun Place and O’Malleys for a good time.
Maybe you will get a cool hat like we did last year!
We had about a week of nice weather and then yesterday it was gone. When I left the house yesterday at 2:00 it was 12°C and by the time I returned home at 9:00 it was 4°C! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. So I turned on the heat, put that extra blanket back on the bed that I had just stored in the closet and came to the sad realization that it is not yet spring. But of course not! That is still a few days away.
And when I drove into Palma today the brutal truth showed again – snow in the mountains!
.I truly hope it is like the saying says, “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” C’mon SPRING!!
Driving home tonight this song was stuck in my head. How it got there I am not sure because I haven’t thought about it (nor heard it) in ages. But it reminds me of my parents. They played a lot of Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Anne Murray. Which makes me remember settling in on Friday and Saturday nights to watch our favorite TV shows: Hee Haw, The Barbara Mandrell Show, Donny and Marie, The Dukes of Hazard, Dallas! And I wasn’t supposed to watch Fantasy Island but when we had a babysitter I always convinced her it was okay and then the show would always completely freak me out and I would lie awake for hours.
What great memories. And how about the music that I was listening to? The usual 70s and 80s awesomeness: J Geils Band, Xanadu, Pac Man Fever, Shawn Cassidy … really so much more. It deserves its own blog post. So I will! One of these days…
But for now. Let me leave you with the song I kept singing over and over (mostly in my head) on my 30 min drive home.
Mr. Conway Twitty, Hello Darling. Cmon, you know it. You’re already saying it in your head – “Hello darling. Nice to see you. It’s been a looooooooong time.” Aww yeah. You know it. Now sing along. PS – Loving the sideburns! Just like my dad used to have … before the Mike Brady perm.
Using hot guys to make us remember to do a breast exam!?
That is totally fine by me.
My friend tagged me in this video (rethink breast cancer your man reminder) – and downloadable APP! And while the video/app is informative, educational and “eye-catching”, it also hopefully serves a purpose – DO A MONTHLY CHECK ON YOUR BREASTS! And if you can’t do that, a yearly mammogram.
My friend who tagged me lost her mother to breast cancer at the tender age of 12 or 13. I can barely remember it. Except for a vivid memory of her mom in her bedroom wanting to see my friend as soon as we had come home from school and she had been waiting to see her children. I remember walking into that dark bedroom with my friend. Her mother gave a smile and held out her hand and asked how school was, I am pretty sure we answered in the usual “fine, boring” way. She was a very sweet woman and I remember she smiled and nodded as we walked out of the room while telling her we were going to go play.
But a few months later she died. And I went to her funeral with my family at the Christian church in our hometown. I must have blocked it out because I don’t really remember it. My mom tells me we went and I was very distraught, but mostly for my friend. I am so happy that this sweet friend of mine now has a beautiful family and is still part of my life after all this time.
My mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer twice and had a mastectomy of one of her breasts. My father was also diagnosed with breast cancer and had a lump removed. So obviously, I try to check myself as often as possible and get regular checkups.
But I never want to make such a downer on things so I really loved this video my friend tagged me in. Who doesn’t want to be reminded to get their breasts checked by hot guys? Watch the video, download the app, give yourself some TLC and fight breast cancer.

Here it is an official holiday for Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza & Formentera. The Day of the Balearic Islands is a public holiday in Mallorca. It is celebrated every year on the 1st of March, in commemoration of the signing of the Statute of Autonomy on 1st March 1983. The festivities are varied and include a variety of traditional markets, childrens activities, and concerts.
The most expensive star studded blockbuster film to have been partly shot on location in Mallorca, Cloud Atlas, will hit the screens here next week.
Have you seen the movie Cloud Atlas? I haven’t yet but I will.
It has already topped the box office in a number of countries, including China, the 100 million dollar movie, the most expensive independent film ever made, opens across Europe next Friday.
Cloud Atlas is a 2012 German epic drama and science fiction film written, produced and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski, of Matrix fame, and Tom Tykwer. Adapted from the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, the film features multiple plot lines set across six different eras and stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, James D’Arcy, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant, to name just a few.
The official synopsis for Cloud Atlas describes the film as: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
The crew along with Tom hanks and Halle Berry spent most of the summer of 2011 on the island shooting in locations such as the Port of Soller, where a huge set was constructed, the beach in Formentor, sa Calobra and various locations in the Tramuntana mountains including the Puig Major.
I remember reading almost daily when the actors were here filming about every movement any of them made. Also, People magazine published several pictures of Halle Berry (affectionately called Hairy Belly here in this household) walking around Palma or on the beach with her boyfriend Olivier Martinez. And she was quoted as Mallorca being one of her new favorite get-away spots! I mean, of course, anyone who has ever visited Mallorca knows what a beautiful paradise we live in.
Sa Calobra (above) is a great beach to go to, with long curvy roads to get there. It is located in the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range (the west coast), and you can reach it via a narrow motorway that winds its way along an impressive route: 14 kilometres of asphalt that descend towards the sea with a host of curves, 12 of them at 80 degrees and one – called Nudo de la Corbata (the tie knot) – at 360º.
I went to Sa Calobra for the first time last year and I quite impressed. Walking 300 metres along the cliffs leads to the outlet of the Torrente de Pareis stream, which makes a tiny, very well-preserved pebble beach. It is an impressive site, surrounded by soaring rock walls facing the sea 30 metres long and more than 200 metres tall.
I can’t wait to see Mallorca showcased in Cloud Atlas! Check out the trailer and go see it! The opening scene in the trailer is Mallorca and most of the outdoor scenes throughout it are the island as well. Looks like a fantastic movie.
It’s Track Tuesday!
Bringing you a lovely (hehe) German song to sing during CARNIVAL! Which is all over the TV here. This one ranks up there with an earlier Track Tuesday – Trololo
Enjoy! And please sing along! Heino with Karamba Karacho, ein Whiskey
