Keep Fighting The Good Fight

STENCIL:

I’m still here. Are you still there? I’m in shock and wasn’t exactly sure what to write, what to do but here I am. How are you holding up? Donald Trump has only been in office for a week and he is already wanting us to pay a 20% tax on products from Mexico (I’m sorry, didn’t you say Mexico was going to pay for that wall?) and discriminating against Muslims and legal green card holders from entering our country. What?!

Are you angry? Because I am. And as I said my Safety Pin post – “And I will give him the chance to lead. But never forget Mr. Trump, we are watching. And if you do things which are detrimental to people’s well-being, trust me, you will hear from us. We will fight, we will protest, we will protect the things that so vehemently need protecting. We will not back down from something that is right and good.”

And here we are. Already. Just one week in. You gotta be kidding me. But I have a lot of strong women who ARE fighting and calling and protesting. I have friends who went to the Women’s Marches, who are donating to the ACLU, who are calling their senators and telling them what they don’t like. Some are listening and some aren’t – Senator Inhofe (R-OK) is NOT listening. We called and said we didn’t support Devos and we were told that he didn’t care. The person we spoke to said a lot of people have called to complain but he isn’t changing his mind (and NOBODY called to support Devos). Because he doesn’t care! Please Oklahoma peeps. VOTE.HIM.OUT.

Back to Trump. What can you do? Here are five ways. Take a deep breath. We are fighting this together. You are not alone.

  1. Donate to American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) – The ACLU has filed suit against the Trump administration, arguing that his executive order is unconstitutional. Donate to causes supporting legal challenges.
  2. Make calls to your government. This is the best way for them to hear your voice. Better than a Facebook post, better than a petition, call them and tell them what you think. 5 Calls is fantastic (it really is). They use your location and give you the representatives numbers PLUS they give you a script to use if you are unsure of what exactly to say or if you get too nervous.
  3. Join a protest. Last weekend it was the Women’s March, which was a planned event. But this weekend it was spontaneous with people protesting at airports against the detained travelers. Say loud and clear to all who is listening – “This is NOT who we are!”
  4. Stay informed. Be loud or be quiet – but either way I hope you keep informed about various movements in this country and then decide what you, personally, want to do with that info. Flippable.org is the biggest one at the moment (most developed) and you get emails from time to time, but their info is very well researched. Their main focus is on state races and to flip the seat back to blue. They let you know which races are important, who is running and how you can support them.
  5. And last. Get your friends involved. Those that are feeling like you and are frustrated and angry and scared about what is happening. Speak out and speak up! Let people know this is not who our America is!

Women’s March Signage

THANK YOU! To all the women (and men!) who participated in the Women’s Marches around the world. I got tears in my eyes seeing all the incredible images from Washington D.C. to Paris to Kenya to India! WOW. Thank you for fighting for our rights. Human Rights. And we will continue to fight. I loved all the signs – some funny, some serious and some on animals. 🙂 Here are some of my favorites. GIRL POWER.

Sant Sebestià Fest~ Palma

Saint Sebastian is Palma de Mallorca’s patron saint and is honored for a week long during the end of January with each day becoming more and more adventuresome. Tonight there will be devils, fire and torradas. Will you dare the devils or will they dare you?

ss1

Devils aren’t part of the celebration of Sant Sebastià, they are from the fiesta of Sant Antoni but the two are celebrated in Mallorca at the end of January and they have kind of merged together. Which makes for one fun party! The devils come for you as the correfoc (firerun) continues on, careful for fireworks and devils spitting fire at you.

The correfocs are my favorite.

It’s cold in Mallorca so don’t forget your warm clothes, sausages for the torrada and you might want to forego that hairspray for the night.

Marrakech, Morocco

Morocco was exciting, fascinating, not very frightening but I felt that sometimes I should keep my senses about me in this culturally stimulating and lovely country. This was my first time to experience the people,  the food, the environment.

aeroport-marrakech

Marrakech, Morocco – Landed around 9ish p.m. and after going through customs and exchanging my euros for dirhams (at the moment it’s 1 EUR = 10.7 MD), we waited around for our hotel ride from the airport. Unfortunately, that never happened. So we negotiated with the taxi drivers. Well, not really, we told the main taxi dude where we needed to go and there seemed to be an intense discussion amongst the other taxi drivers when it was finally settled for around 20 euros, we hopped in.

This is actually one of my favorite times – when you see a city for the first time. All is fresh, all is new and crisp. I remember what seemed to be a barrier with tall walls surrounding the city, older looking taxis, people out walking.

The taxi drove down narrower and narrower streets all while speaking on his phone in Arabic from the airport to now but switching several times between one person and the next. He parked at the end of a street that was still not our hotel. There were several random small shops selling anything from saris to chicken on a stick to brand new Nikes. A young boy opened our car doors and grabbed our suitcases while motioning for us to follow him. Well, he had our suitcases and I still had zero idea where our hotel was so … we followed. After a five minute walk we finally arrived. And then began what we would experience the entire time – people wanting to be paid for this service that we never really wanted or negotiated for. But nonetheless, we had needed him to find our hotel. We forked over probably about 10 euros (!) when the door opened to the Riad Dar Darma and were whisked away into paradise.

The Riad Dar Darma was a lifesaver for me. Check out my blog post about it HERE. The streets of Marrakech are so confusing with twists and turns it is easy to get turned around, which we did many times. The first day was a spa appointment at the Hammam de la Rose for a traditional Hammam. You must go!! As aforementioned about the streets we got so lost we ended up 2 hours late. I know, shame on us. But seriously, COMPLETELY LOST. This time we actually met a nice person who put us in the right direction and we finally found it. Perla had to plead to them to let us have a new appointment. Thankfully they did, an hour and a half later. So, like all good Americans we headed for the bar to wait. Although Morocco is an Islamic country, there is a laid-back attitude towards alcohol, with bars in most tourist areas staying open late. You just have to search for them.

We found one very close to the spa, making sure to not get lost again! And it became our favorite place to grab a drink during our days there. The Souk Kafe was a lovely spot with a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Marrakech. Pretty good food, decent prices and they had wine!

The next day was a lovely trip to the Jardin Majorelle. We viewed many gorgeous plants, trees, flowers, fountains – it was a breath of fresh air to get into some nature. Afterwards, we had lunch at the restaurant there with a delicious mint tea.

I had the egg tajine (a popular Moroccan stew-like meal named after the type of pot it is cooked in). So good. Plus a cute cat hanging out with us. We took a horse ride back to our hotel – one, because we had walked to the gardens and our dogs were barkin’ and two, we wanted to see some new sights and not have to deal with people wanting money to show us back to our hotel.

All in all, it was an entertaining, interesting, and new experience for me. And I will return. But next time I will be better prepared with finding my way around and possibly hire a guide for a day to show me the markets and the best sights. Ooooh! And I want to go to the mountains! So much to do!

Free Airport Wi-Fi

If you’re like me, which would be someone who is a bit thrifty and doesn’t like to pay for wi-fi (especially at the airport where you have a little down time to browse the internet), I have a good thing for you. A travel blogger, Anil Polat, has created an always up-to-date list of airport wireless connections with passwords. He updates it regularly with help from fellow travelers like you and me.

Thank you Mr. Polat! I hate it when I can’t get free wi-fi. And now, at most airports, I can – for FREE! One of my favorite words.

You can bookmark the map, which is HERE on google. Or he has created an app called WiFox that you can purchase for $1.99. Don’t forget to let Anil Polat know of passwords at airports where you are by commenting on the link. Enjoy your free airport wireless and happy travels!
