Five things

Heyo! Been in a bit of a writing slump but hope the break that soon. Today is list five things off the top of my head.

1. Where the hell did summer go? A rainstorm (which was quite needed) started on Thursday and is still off and on. I loved it the first day – ahhhhh, fresh clean air. But now it has cooled off and I realized I wasn’t ready for summer to be over yet. Please come back!

2. I always start dreaming of what I am going to do, where I am going to be on my birthday in October. I get about a month to think of so many ideas. Last year was the big 4-0 (shhhhhhhhhhhhh) and I didn’t get to really celebrate it in the big 4-0 style because my mom was having surgery and I was there to help her with everything that goes along with being sick and having a big surgery. And don’t get me wrong, I was so happy to be there for my mom. If she needs me, I am there, whether or not I am having a milestone moment. My mom is all recovered so I get to celebrate it right this time. I’ve been dreaming of Morocco…… who is coming with!? But it might just be a ferry ride to the island of Menorca. Or Cornwall? Or NYC? OR DISNEYLAND!??!?!?! Please help me.

3. I feel like I’ve been so lazy this month. Wait, August is over. I feel like I was so lazy last month. There, I said it.

4. Does anyone know how I can make like a million dollars easily? I have so many things on my new favorite shopping site Shopbop.com that I want to buy. Would love some Rag & Bone jeans, Frye knee high boots, J Brand skinny jeans, a Tory Burch clutch… I could continue for about a year.

5. Decided I am not cooking tonight. It’s either going to be calling Tropi Pizza for a delivery or driving to S’Arenal for a döner (that is a gyro to you English peeps).

Tell me what’s rattling around in your head. Bu bye.

Happy Freakin President’s Day, yo.

I teach children English and today we discussed President’s Day being celebrated in the U.S. After learning the reason of the day – Mr. Washington and Mr. Lincoln – they were then declared President and were able to do what they wanted to. Here are a few of the highlights.

What would you change if you were President?

1. Paint the White House black.

2. Everyone in the U.S. would get a Ferrari.

3. No homework ever.

4. Only one burger allowed once a week. (This is because all of Europe believes all of U.S. is fat)

5.  Change the NBA to JAF (my student’s initials).

How would you help the unemployment situation?   I would plant grass in the desert and then hire everyone to cut it with scissors.

Who would you invite to your inauguration party?

The list from the female : Justin Bieber, Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, ME! and Demi Lovato

The list from the male: Rafa Nadal, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, ME! and some Spanish soccer player’s girlfriend.

Not too shabby of choices. Who would you pick to your inauguration party?

Thanks for the memories

Thought I would do my end of year “Stars We Lost” list again. It was such a hit last year! Um, with all three of you. Thank you my fabulous three! Thank you for reading this girl’s blog. Still not stoppin, not letting the elevator break.me.down.

So while I felt this year was quite lame compared to the amount of shocking deaths in 2009, it was a year that the TV stars decided to croak. And it is amazing the amount of wives or husbands they had! And not in the polygamous way.

Here we go. In a complete order of randomness, which is my middle name. Oh, no wait, that is Veronica.

1. Dixie Carter (1939 – 2010) A southern woman after my own heart. To be honest, she was mainly Julia Sugarbaker to me from the TV hit Designing Women. Number of husbands: 3

2. Rue McClanahan (1934 – 2010) Another southern gal! Ahh, how we loved Blanche from The Golden Girls! The second hit TV show about four women, actually I would have loved to see Blanche and Julia go head to head. Rue was born in Oklahoma AND majored in German and Theatre. She was also on her sixth husband when she died. What an inspiration! Number of husbands: 6

3. Alexander McQueen (1969 – 2010) He was British! He created gorgeous designs! What is not to love? His clients included Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles. Sadly, on the morning of Feb. 11, he took his own life, found hanged in his wardrobe. Your beauty and inspiration to fashion will be missed Mr. McQueen. Number of husbands: 1

4. Dennis Hopper (1936 – 2010) Whenever I think of Dennis Hopper I think of cool. Right? I mean how could you not with him starring in Easy Rider (which he also directed). Add to the fact that he made his debut in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant, you just know he’s gonna be a star. He dabbled in a little bit of everything; movies, TV (Bonanza, The Twilight Zone) but he was also a prolific painter, photographer and sculptor. With a camera bought for him from his first wife he created the cover art for the Ike & Tina Turner single River Deep – Mountain High. Ride on Mr. Hopper. Number of  wives: 5

5. Gary Coleman ( 1968 – 2010) Four words – “What’choo talkin’ ’bout Willis.”  RIP Gary Coleman. Number of wives: 1

6. Tony Curtis (1925 – 2010)  When I think of Tony Curtis, I think of his marriage to Janet Leigh (actress from Psycho) and their famous daughter Jamie Lee Curtis. But the movie Some Like It Hot was a brilliant and hilarious performance with Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. Have you seen it? You should. Number of wives: 5

7. Leslie Nielsen (1926 – 2010) Maybe it is the fact that his film debut was for Ransom! (NOT with Mel G.) in 1956 or it could be his deadpan comedy in Airplane, but I liked him.  “Nice beaver”, “Thanks I just had it stuffed last week” – and “Surely, you can’t be serious”, “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley” are on my list of favorite movie quotes that if you are a close friend of mine, you must have heard me say. Number of wives: 4

8. Corey Haim (1971 – 2010) Ahhh, Corey Haim!! The Lost Boys! No wonder I am a freak for Edward… Hello, Twilight. Yes, keep up. I tore pics of him (we are back to Corey now) from Tiger Beat and pasted them inside my closet door. Oh, that was a GREAT door. LOVED the movie Lucas. He never married but did date many famous ladies; Alyssa Milano, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Eggert, even Victoria Beckham. Sadly, he accidentally overdosed on a concoction of Valium, Vicodin, Soma and Haloperidol. RIP Lost Boy. Number of wives: 0

9. Tom Bosley (1927 – 2010) The loveable dad of Richie and Joanie. Please tell me you know I am talking about Howard Cunningham from Happy Days. My parents liked him on Murder, She Wrote as Sheriff Amos Tupper. Number of wives: 2

10. J.D. Salinger (1919 – 2010) I know I mentioned in no certain order but I guess I saved the best for last. J.D. Salinger touched so many lives with his writing. The Catcher in the Rye is a fantastically superb novel featuring Holden Caulfield which Salinger later admitted “the novel was sort of autobiographical”. I have also read Nine Stories which is a collection of short stories, sometimes I don’t get short stories, I mean, they are so short. Number of wives: 3

The final count of husbands and wives from the Top 10 list of celebs that died in 2010: 30

And to bid adieu, with the perfect quote from The Catcher in the Rye:

Boy, when you’re dead, they really fix you up.  I hope to hell when I do die somebody has sense enough to just dump me in the river or something.  Anything except sticking me in a goddamn cemetery.  People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on Sunday, and all that crap.  Who wants flowers when you’re dead?  Nobody.   ~ Holden Caulfield

lists · Mallorca

To see and be seen.

Lately, I have been in Palma several times – getting my mammogram and waiting for the Audi to be fixed were the two main reasons but within that involved noticing the antics of the Mallorcan tourists (for the most part) but also, a bit of the regular Spanish life.

Things seen:

1. I parked my car in the underground garage and walked up towards the light. Within minutes of emerging I noticed three younger girls (in their early 20s) dressed in the latest fashion of leggings, longer shirts off one shoulder and when I got closer I heard American voices! It is very rare to hear American voices, and even more so for them to come from three ladies in their 20s. It was nice to hear their comments (something about guys, naturally!) but also to see their confidence. I have heard before that Americans have this interesting assurance of oneself, a cockiness even. That I was proud to see. And as they passed, without a notice of an American in their midst, I smiled and felt a bit of homesickness tugging at my heartstrings.

2. Homeless dude walking happily in and out of stores. He had a bit of pep in his step, even without shoes.

3. A mother and father smoking cigarettes around their two young children. The youngest was in a stroller and must have bit? scratched? his mother’s hand because she became very upset with him. She slapped his legs several times and screamed in his face. And then continued to show to her husband and look at her wrist over and over again. If you cannot control your temper to the things that children do without acting like a child yourself, I don’t think one should be allowed to have children. IMO, of course.

4. And then there was the other family spectrum. A couple each with a huge backpack, and in one of those backpacks there was a young baby. They were very sweet with each other and held hands while crossing the street. Yes, they are allowed to have children. I give my stamp of approval.

5. The metro! I love it! It is amazingly clean and never tons of people. The hidden secret of Mallorca. Granted, I have only taken it from the industrial district where I take the Audi to, and then into Placa Espana, but it is my favorite mode of public transportation.

6. Extremely short nuns walking along Paseo Maritimo. They were so very short, but then very round, kind of completely adorable with their black rosary beads hanging from their hands.

7. I would have laughed out loud if I hadn’t been so annoyed at the tourists on their Segways maneuvering through the crowded sidewalks of Palma. Not really sure how they managed the many steps that come about. That kind of went hand in hand with the 15-year-old boy riding a four-wheeler around the main streets of Palma. How is this legal?

8. At the red light while taking my rental car back there was a juggler that came out into the middle of the street to perform. Not too bad of a juggling job and he was at least TRYING to do something, to earn a little money. He walked between the aisle of cars and I raised my hand out the driver’s side window to give him a euro. Once he saw me he put on this show, he strutted, flirted, and gave me glances through his eyelashes. I laughed, gave him the euro and sped through the yellow light before I was subjected to more humiliation.

9. And the last – boys ranging in ages from 10 – 18 all with Justin Bieber haircuts. He has definitely arrived in Spain. Welcome to the Bieber.

In my head.

Blavod Black Vodka

.

Just five little things rotating in my head today:

1. I gave up Coke for Lent. I REALLY want one. When is Easter again?

2. I went out with the youngins in Campos last night. Did you know there is black vodka and caramel vodka? Black vodka mixed with Sprite and a caramel vodka shot, both surprisingly delicious.

3. This U.S. job search from Mallorca is turning into total bullshit. Just sayin.

4. I have decided to stop smiling and laughing. They just cause way too many lines in the face. Smiling and laughing are completely overrated anyways.

5. Are seven cats at one time too many to move to the USA?

lists · Quirky

Auf Wiedersehen, thanks for the memories.

Hmfph. In a blog funk.

What to write about? Christmas? The climate change conference? This just in – U.S., China, India reportedly reach a “meaningful agreement”. It’s about time! Are you guys still doing your composting? Turning off lights when not in use? Walking to places instead of driving? Good.

How about one of my favorite topics, DEATH.

evil cackling and wringing of hands

No idea why death intrigues me so much and if you are a celebrity and bite the bullet, well, I’m intrigued even more. 2009 was a ROUGH year for celebrities. Here are my top 10 people who died this year that I actually gave somewhat of a damn about:

1. Mary Travers (1936 – 2009) Member of folk group Peter, Paul and Mary. The group’s first album, Peter, Paul and Mary came out in 1962 and immediately scored hits with their versions of “If I Had a Hammer” (listen to it below, one of my favorites) and “Lemon Tree”. The former won them Grammys for best folk recording and best performance by a vocal group. Their song “Puff the Magic Dragon” brings back so many memories, and was actually sung during the recent road trip with my parents! (Dad sung in his heart).

2. Les Paul (1915 – 2009) A pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar. The godfather of rock. No more needs to be said.

3. Walter Cronkite (1916 – 2009) The most trusted man in America ……”And that’s the way it is.”

4. John Hughes (1950 – 2009) Where would I be without Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, National Lampoon’s Vacation and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Certainly not the slightly off-kilter, movie quoting extraordinaire, sometimes cute dweeb that I am today. Thank you John Hughes for bringing Cousin Eddie, The Donger, “Eat My Shorts”, Simple Minds, “Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone?”, “By night’s end, I predict me and her will interface”, into my life.

5. Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009) C’mon, you didn’t really think I would leave Jacko off the list. Thriller was one of my first MTV videos and Jeannie and I can do the Thriller dance for you …..er, after a few cocktails. So many great songs, “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, “Ben”, “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough”, I could go on and on. Miss that moonwalking, one-gloved man.

6. Eunice Shriver (1921 – 2009) Thank you Ms. Shriver for founding the movement that became Special Olympics, the largest movement for acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities in the history of the world.

7. Oscar Mayer (1914 – 2009) My Bologna has a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R. My bologna has a second name, it’s M-A-Y-E-R. Oh I love to eat it everyday, and if you ask me why say….. Cause’ Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A!!!! I have friends who go freakin crazy when they see the Wienermobile. Thank you Mr. Mayer for your delicious bologna, bacon and hot dogs – still a staple in my lunchtime meals!

8. Patrick Swayze (1952 – 2009) “Nobody puts baby in a corner.” Need I say more?

9. Paul Harvey (1918 – 2009) Mr. Harvey reminds me of my days of high school in Oklahoma (btw, he was born in Tulsa). His The Rest of the Story series would always broadcast during the Sunday Top 40 on my car radio. And I did A LOT of driving around in my four door Buick Electra. That car rocked. It sat 27,000 comfortably and the horn sounded like a freight train.

10. Farrah Fawcett (1947 – 2009) Loved the hair, loved Charlie’s Angels, loved the red swimsuit, an iconic beauty.

Honorable mentions from the animal kingdom: Gidget the Taco Bell Dog – “Yo quiero Taco Bell”, Socks the Clinton cat and my beloved cat Good Morning.

May everyone rest in peace.

Those are my top ten. Why don’t you let me know if I missed a favorite of yours. To conclude, I give you “If I Had A Hammer” by Peter, Paul and Mary.

Well, Bless My Soul

Aaaaaaaand……it’s another list! Love me some lists.

Wait! Don’t go! It will be FUN-NAH. Promise. How are YOU? Please tell me, I wanna know! What do you count as your blessings?

One of my closest friends from the early Oklahoma years called yesterday to catch up on life. We have known each other since we were ten. I remember roller skating to her house wearing my new tennis shoe skates with orange, green and yellow stripes down the sides. Did any of you have roller skates like these? I lived in those things and would gladly have gone into the SCC pool with them if allowed. Plus I had a rockstar skating routine to Jessie’s Girl perfected, just waiting for someone, ANYONE to ask to see it.

We gossiped and caught up on our lives. It is quite possible I bitched about a thing here or there. And she reminded me, that when I feel my life is crashing all around me  – don’t forget to count your blessings. Amen sister.

Here are mine. What are some of yours?

1. My health. I never take it for granted and I think at least four times a year I have appendicitis, or a broken rib, or possibly swine flu. I guess that’s what happens when growing up with a nurse for a mother. I scoured over those books to find my latest, attention getting symptom. I told my friends in seventh grade that I had diabetes and then held my birthday party on Halloween to devour tons of candy. Smart, a little more research kid. But I seriously think I have appendicitis at the moment.

2. OKST. Cowboys kicking some UGA ass last night! College football is back! If only I had Euro ESPN to watch, just not the same with a live ticker.

3. My steadfast, fun-loving, margarita drinking group of friends from all over the world. Thank you for always being supportive. You ROCK!

4. Same for my family. I am lucky to have a loving (and crazy) family. My mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law and cutest nephew ever live too far away.

avery rockingch

LOVE that hair! Cutie Patootie.

5. Cool breezes off the Mediterranean

6. Xanadu (roller skates mentioned above were also in many Xanadu reenactments)

7. My boyfriend (The German). He is a good soul, who (whom? GAH!) I love with all my heart

8. FIVE of the sweetest cats ever. I never was a cat person until mama cat brought me seven babies three years ago. Welcome to Mallorca sucka is what she said when she left them at my front door.

9. Pa amb Oli

10. Delicious Mallorcan wine…..speaking of which. Good night!
