Life with a cat(s)

Actually it is – Life with a cat cats.

Maybe you know, maybe you don’t know. I have five cats. Yep, FIVE. I used to have seven! And spring is just around the corner which brings May flowers …. and kittens! So many wild cats around here you just never know when a new baby ends up wandering around. And seriously, how can you turn away sweet faces like these?

.Go get yourself a cat! They are adorable, hilarious and fulfill your life so much more than you can imagine. But actually I don’t really care if you are a dog person. Get yourself a dog! Or both! I would recommend to get one from the pound or like I did and have a wild mama leave you her babies. Either way, make sure you are ready for it. Please never ever get an animal and then realize you can’t care for it and then must give it away. That just breaks my heart.

An animal, is a friend for life. Treat it like one. Gracias.

Happy Day Chuck!

Thanksgiving has passed and thankfully this year I was able to enjoy it with my family in the USA. I am here for my dad’s 70th birthday which sometimes falls on Turkey Day, but not this year. We enjoyed the norm – turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberrries, green bean casserole and several pies to choose from, pumpkin being my favorite.

The day has gone and today we get to enjoy the leftovers. Turkey and cranberry sandwich anyone? And tomorrow is dad’s birthday. I think his greatest present will be if Oklahoma State wins against OU in the Bedlam game tomorrow so let’s keep all things crossed for that. My dad’s name is Charles but usually goes by Chuck. In the spirit of still lingering with Thanksgiving and the birthday I am ending with one of my favorite childhood memories – Charlie Brown. Nothing is better than enjoying life with good friends and family. Hope all of you enjoyed the day like that as well.

Back In Black

Hey y’all! I have been out and about in the lovely areas of Arizona, Louisiana and New York. My bi/tri annual trek overseas. I have so much to share about my time in New Orleans, my FIRST time ever there – I can’t believe it took me so long. And my usual stomping grounds of New York City.

Arizona was fun but busy taking care of two youngins. My nephews, aged four and one point five were quite the handful! My mom and I were the basic caregivers while my brother was in school and his wife in South Korea for her brother’s wedding. Congrats to the newlyweds!

Let’s see, I tried to catch up on my new favorite TV show SMASH. I am pretty much addicted to anything that has singing and dancing in it. Therefore, Glee and Smash are what I watch. But I have been getting into Downton Abbey. Albeit the lack of singing and dancing. Amazing! Maybe because it is British?

I also watched a few movies: The Help, Hugo, Bridesmaids, Twilight the Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I (could there BE a longer title?).  They were good but I wanted a bit more from all of them….  SORRY!

Alright, I just wanted to say a quick HOLA! I am back in Spain and so happy to be back. Sadly, one of my cats died while I was gone (don’t worry she wasn’t alone, my boyfriend was here taking care of them). But to end my post I would like to say, Rest In Peace Sweet LD (aka Fatty). I miss your shy ways and still see you lounging in your favorite black chair. Sending you love and light my sweet, fat, completely black cat. Miss you Fatty. oxox

Hospital Daze

I apologize for not posting lately. I flew back to the States late September to be with my mom while she had a difficult surgery. I thought I would be able to send some posts out but it is amazing the amount of time spent when taking care of someone you love – plus watching my adorable two nephews! Ayden has learned how to climb up the stairs at an amazing rate but going back down, um, not so good. So I had to watch that cutie so he wouldn’t take a tumble and smash his cute noggin onto the floor.

The time in the hospital had its good moments with the doctors and nurse staff, and then it had some extremely frustrating moments. I was going to complain in a post about some of the healthcare my mom received but I have changed my mind. What I will say is, don’t be afraid to ask questions, to double check they are giving the right medication, the correct dose, if the doctor said he wants this done and they refuse or change his orders, request to see the manager and demand the doctors orders are followed. If you don’t feel you are getting good care, things answered, speak up!

But I still wanted to explain to y’all about the time spent – Mom had surgery on her kidney and ureter, she was in the hospital for five days and then was able to go home. All was going well! Every day she made improvements and soon she was requesting her five o’clock glass of wine. But then she began having back pain and then two days later started throwing up. Back to the hospital we went. She was upset, nervous and sad to be sick again. And one of the worst thing is we couldn’t get any answers as to what was going on.

For two days she was in the hospital, groaning from the sharp pain in her side and shaking from always being nauseous and vomiting. Was this from the surgery? Was this a new problem? A second CT Scan was ordered and she had to drink this awful mixture for them to see contrast with the scan. She came back from that exhausted and more nauseous. Poor mama!

The nurse gave her some new medicine to control the nausea and she drifted off to sleep for several hours. And when she awoke she was a new woman! The pain and nausea had subsided and she practically jumped out of the hospital bed and was ready to go for a walk around the nurses station. When only a few hours before that PT was sent away immediately because there was no way she could get out of bed without crying in pain and throwing up what little was in her stomach.

I cannot even begin to tell you what a  relief it was to see her without pain. Without getting sick from sitting up in bed. I almost did a jig with her on my arm.

Later that night I came back to the hospital as I always did, every night, to stay til 12, 1 or sometimes 2 am. And she was up in bed watching Wheel of Fortune. We talked about things; the next steps (she had to swallow a camera tomorrow morning to look at the esophagus, stomach) but she also told me about this dream she had the first night she was readmitted to the hospital.

She was sitting in this large oak tree by a stream, and this tree and stream were so familiar. It was where she would go as a young girl living in Wisconsin to get away from her farm chores and her four brothers and sisters. She would hide away in the tree and read and watch and dream. And then the dream changed – it was me and her sitting under the tree with fruit and cheese and wine. We were smiling, happy and comfortable. But as dreams always do it morphed into me as a snowflake and she was a leaf on the tree. But she was connected tightly to the tree and I would cover her with snow to keep her warm.

Granted mom was on morphine and other medications but I had been by her side until about two in the morning that first night. She said she felt safe and warm and happy. I had tears in my eyes by the end of her telling the dream and I had to pretend to get something out of my bag to wipe them away.

I loved the thought of me wrapping her in my cloak of a snowy blanket to comfort her. I hope all of us have someone to take care of them and love them when they are scared and in pain. Someone that allows their mind to take them back to their dreams of childhood. The time when there was no fear. No sadness. No sickness. Only joy and clouds and giggles and most of all, dreams of living forever. I am and will always be, your snowflake.

Now We Go To Poland, eh?

Ah, that headline sounds more Russian, no? Which reminds me of this movie clip I keep seeing with Anna Farris (love her). In the movie, What’s Your Number, there is a scene where she runs into an ex-boyfriend who is British and apparently he thinks she is British too. Until she can’t keep up with the accent and breaks out into a Russian accent saying, “What do you say, a little dancing, eh?” Makes me laugh every. time.

POLAND! I wish walls and trees and roads could talk. Lots of wars here. There was such a drastic difference between Germany and Poland. While Poland is clean and the people seem happy the buildings, roads, cars, fashion all seem a bit stuck. The buildings are mostly bland, grey concrete or just older and a bit rundown. The roads are bumpier, smaller and people just pass when they want. A car in the opposite lane would pass a car in front of it with me coming straight towards them. Everyone just moves as far to the right so literally three cars can pass each other at once. And all of the buses looked they were from 1970.

Nevertheless, I had a lovely time in Poland. Szczecin was first stop.

Our main reason for stopping here was so mom could find more information on her (my) relatives. She made a contact, his name was Marek, and he helped her by speaking to the office that holds all of the registry books. We were able to see books documenting marriages, births, deaths anywhere from the year 1800 – 1920. We would have never been able to look at these books without Marek’s help. The Polish people don’t speak much English and even if they did Marek had to fight a bit to allow the clerk to let us see them.

So the three of us; my mom, my dad and myself poured over these books for several hours. It took awhile to get used to handwriting and exactly what you were looking at; whether it was a marriage or a birth, etc. And anything that had the name Schultz or Müller was something to write down for mom to go through later to see if anything matched. My mom actually found the something she had already known about, her great great great grandparents wedding but to see it written down in this book was an inspiring thing indeed.

After about five hours of researching we finally were finished with what we could find. We did a bit of sightseeing and we were again on our way, deeper into Poland towards the town of Bytow.

Saw the Prussian eagle everywhere
So many beautiful and very old buildings here in Szczecin

EPRT II Rügen Island, Germany

I do believe this is my favorite picture from all that I took on our three week trip. I thought it was some kind of modern beach house but what little information I could find is it’s a lifeguard station. This is in Binz, Rügen Island, Germany. It was built in 1968. Isn’t it like, totally awesome dude?! I loved it.

Rügen or Rugia is Germany’s largest island, located on the Baltic Sea. It is one of the most visited holiday destinations in Germany. We traveled almost the entire island and no doubt about it, Binz was the place to be. From the gorgeous mansion hotels to the darling beach cabanas (huts?) this was the busiest area of the island. We drove through Jasmund National Park in hopes of seeing the famous chalk cliffs but sadly there isn’t a way to see them without hopping on a bus or hiking for a few miles. I wouldn’t have minded a hike but my cute parents are getting older and it probably would have been too much for them. Maybe next time!

Please enjoy the beautiful island of Rügen:
